Coast’s heritage in good hands
THE region’s cultural heritage is in good hands following the appointment of the Sunshine Coast Cultural Heritage Reference Group for 2018-2020.
At its July ordinary meeting, the council endorsed the nine-member community reference group, which provides advice to the council on the delivery of the Heritage Levy program in addition to preserving and promoting cultural heritage in the Sunshine Coast region.
Heritage portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski welcomed returning and new members to the group.
“The heritage reference group works with council to monitor and potentially review strategic priorities for Heritage Levy expenditure in line with the Sunshine Coast Heritage Plan 2015-2020.” Cr Baberowski said
“The group also contribute to a shared vision for cultural heritage that is inclusive, relevant and innovative.
“I look forward to working with the new group to continue advocating the value and raising the profile of our region’s intriguing cultural heritage.”
Members were selected following an expression of interest process.
The reference group meets on a quarterly basis.
The group was originally established by the council in April 2010.

TWO Coolum residents have been re-appointed to the Sunshine Coast Cultural Heritage Reference Group for 2018-2020 and are determined to ensure issues “north of Maroochy River” aren’t forgotten.
Council recently endorsed the nine-member community reference group that is responsible for providing advice for the delivery of the Heritage Levy program, in addition to preserving and promoting cultural heritage in the Sunshine Coast region.
Among the group members are Coolum locals, heritage architect Adrian Just and historian Frances Windolf.
The duo has long been committed to local heritage and history.
“Heritage considerations and cultural considerations are a large part of what makes a community,” Mr Just, for whom this is his fourth term on the committee, said.
“We’ve found that around the world, the new cities that they’ve tried to develop — particularly in China and America — they don’t work, principally, because they don’t have true heritage.
“So, I know we’re a fairly new community on the Sunshine Coast, but we have representation from traditional groups, we have young and old on the committee, and there’s a wide range of interests.”
Frances Wildolf, who has a Masters Honours in Local History, has been named for her third term on the committee.
“I’m really pleased to be re-elected to SCCHRG because we’re working towards a long-time project that is considering heritage sites all across the region, and, often, this side of the Maroochy River misses out on things like that, so I’m really pleased to see that that’s part of it.” Mrs Windolf said.
“But seeing the whole region and the awareness of heritage is really important and that’s why I like being on the committee.”
